Arriving

Marrakech’s international airport (Marrakech-Menara Airport, to give it its full name) is located just 6 kilometres south-west of the city. Easyjet flies there from London Gatwick airport. Ryanair flies there from London Luton. British Airways flies there from London Heathrow and London Gatwick. Thomsonfly operates a service from Manchester. The airport itself offers an information desk open from 9.00am to 9.00pm daily, two banks with currency exchange services open from 8.00am to 6.00pm daily and two cash machines.

A regular bus service (line 19) operates between the airport and the city, dropping off at key points, like Place Djemaa L'Fna and Guéliz. A single fare costs 20 dirham (DH) and a return costs 30 dirham. There’s also a taxi rank right outside the arrivals hall. As in most countries, the taxi drivers will try to overcharge you, but you should expect to pay no more than 60DH for a journey to the centre of town. Most drivers will accept payment in dollars, euros or pounds at the equivalent dirham rate.

Getting Around

In the Medina (Old Town), which is by far the most popular area of Marrakech for visitors, the streets are far too narrow for buses – walking is absolutely the only way to get round it. The only time it might be useful to take a bus is if you’re heading from the Medina to Guéliz (line 1). A single fare costs 3DH and is payable to the driver, who will expect exact money. Almost all buses stop at Jema El Fna and Place Youssef Ben Tachfine.

An alternative and romantic way to travel is by caleche – pronounced kalesh – a small horse-drawn carriage. These can be hired at Square de Foucauld (the small park at the bottom of Djemma El Fna). It's wise to agree on a price before setting off. As a guide, you should expect to pay around 80 DH per hour, per carriage.
